Why Does Shoes Creasing Occur?

There are various reasons for shoe creasing, which are mentioned below.

  1. The primary reason for boot creasing is due to the natural movement of the feet while walking and running.
  2. The shoe’s material type affects the amount of creasing; few materials, such as leather and suede, are more prone to crease due to their softer and pliable nature.
  3. Poor fitting: when the size of the shoes is big or smaller than your feet size, they tend to be creased while walking. If the boot size is big, the extra space between the shoes and the toes limits the foot’s ability to hold the shoe’s shape. In the case of small shoe sizes, it puts more stress on the shoes; hence, it creases.
  4. Accumulation of dust, dirt and grime over a period of time makes the material of the shoes stiff and prone to creasing.
  5. Wearing shoes with wet feet can cause creasing and tears.
  6. Shoes with thinner soles, such as loafers and dresses, are more prone to creasing due to a lack of cushioning.
  7. Incorrect size
  8. Prolong wear

How to Prevent your shoes from creasing?

1. Use Paper Towels or old paper:

Stuff the shoes with paper towels or with old paper from heel to toe box to maintain their shape. Packing it tightly helps to strengthen the crease.

2. Shoes Tree:

it is an adjustable, invaluable wood or plastic tool that you insert into your shoes when they are not in use to prevent and remove creases from the boots.

A shoe tree stretches the boot wall and prevents it from collapsing. A shoe tree made up of cedar not only prevents the boot from creasing but also absorbs the moisture and odours from the cleat.

3. Choose the right Fit Footwear:

Correct size shoes move in harmony with the feet, thus minimising unnecessary bending and flexing of the shoes, hence reducing the crease risk.

If the cleat size is large, there is an extra space between your feet and toes; hence, it has a greater opportunity to fold and crease easily.

While if the boot is too tight it leads to premature creasing and wear due to the additional stress.

4. Avoid using in Rain and Wet Conditions:

Exposure of your cleat to rain and wet conditions leads to the formation of wrinkles and creases. Boot materials are susceptible to more bending and folding when it gets wet.

Therefore, it is very important to treat your boot with water-resistant spray before using it in rain and wet conditions.

Furthermore, If your sneaker gets wet, don’t use a direct heat source such as a hair dryer or heater for drying. It will shrink and wrap the material.

5. Use a Shoehorn:

A shoe horn is a tool that has a curved shape with a short handle and a long spoon-like head that helps you glide your foot into a snug-fitting cleat with ease without bending the heel of your boot.

It prevents the crushing of the heel helping it to keep in shape and extending its life span. Without a shoehorn, the heel of your shoes gets bent, and it becomes very difficult to fix it.

6. Use Sneaker Crease Protector:

One of the most effective measures to prevent crease formation is the use of a sneaker crease protector, also known as a sneaker guard, crease guard, or crease shield.

It is inserted into the toe box of your sneaker, which is more prone to creasing. Sneaker guards are simple to use. Just slide them into the cleat before putting them on.

It is a thin plastic insert unnoticeable when worn, does not cause any discomfort, and allows you to walk naturally without affecting the fit.

7. Tie The Shoes, Lace, Properly:

The space between your shoes and foot is one of the main causes of creases. If the space is more, the bending at the toe increases, which leads to the formation of more creases.

You have to tie the shoelace in a way that feels comfortable and snug enough not to move around.

A properly tightened shoelace prevents too much space between your shoes and foot movement, which leads to creases. Hence, keep your shoes tightly laced from toe to tongue to reduce crease forming on the shoes.

8. Use Thick Shocks:

Wearing the thick shocks reduces the gap between your foot and the upper layer of the shoes; hence, it prevents the vamp from stretching and moving, thus reducing the crease formation.

Method to Remove the Crease that are already formed

1. By using a Shoes Tree:

Shoe trees are helpful in removing creases. It may not work fast, but stretch your shoes to their normal shape.

To preserve the original shape of the shoes, insert the shoe tree in a boot after every use; otherwise, the crease will become too prominent.

Always use cedar shoe trees. It not only keeps the boot leather stretched and maintains the shape but also absorbs moisture and keeps your shoes smelling fresh.

2. Use rubbing Alcohol:

It is a cheap and effective method to remove the crease from the boot and work best with the cleat having mild creases.

Before applying the rubbing alcohol to remove the crease, clean the boot properly.

  1. Stuff the boot with a paper ball or other suitable material
  2. Take an equal proportion of rubbing alcohol and water in a spray bottle
  3. Spray the solution on the crease and massage it against the direction of the crease with your hand.
  4. Insert the shoe tree into the boot and leave it to dry for a few hours and then apply moisturiser or conditioner on it.
